What is Lean?
Lean is a methodology focused on maximising value by minimising waste within an organisation. Originally derived from the Toyota Production System (TPS), lean aims to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance product quality. By streamlining processes and eliminating non-value-adding activities, it helps organisations create more value with fewer resources.
Key Principles of Lean:
- Value: Define value from the customer’s perspective. Only activities that directly contribute to the customer’s needs are considered valuable.
- Value Stream: Map all the actions (both value-adding and non-value-adding) involved in the creation of a product or service. Identify and eliminate waste.
- Flow: Ensure that value-creating steps flow smoothly without interruption or delays.
- Pull: Produce only what is needed when it’s needed, based on customer demand. This reduces overproduction and excess inventory.
- Perfection: Continuously improve processes by seeking ways to reduce waste and increase value in every aspect of the business.
Types of Waste in Lean (often referred to as “Muda”):
- Overproduction: Producing more than needed or too early.
- Waiting: Delays caused by waiting for materials, information, or people.
- Transport: Unnecessary movement of materials or products.
- Extra Processing: Performing more work than necessary or using more resources than needed.
- Inventory: Holding more inventory than required, which leads to unnecessary costs.
- Motion: Unnecessary movement of people or equipment.
- Defects: Rework or errors that result in the need to correct mistakes.
- Human Waste: It involves misusing or underutilising the potential of employees.
Lean Tools & Techniques:
- Kaizen: Continuous, incremental improvements driven by employee involvement.
- 5S: Organise the workspace for efficiency (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardise, Sustain).
- Kanban: A visual scheduling system to manage work and inventory.
- A3 Problem Solving: A structured approach to solving problems using root cause analysis.
In essence, lean focuses on creating more value for customers with fewer resources. As a result, it enhances efficiency and boosts effectiveness across an organisation.

Business Transition
“Neil has been working closely with the KND team to create a workable and achievable plan to move us forward. They have ‘handheld’ when required and taken a back seat when it was evident that we were confident in driving the next level of the process. Their advice along the way has been invaluable and they have been available at all times to respond to our questions.“
